Using a torch-on primer before installing torch-on waterproofing membranes offers several advantages, especially in terms of ensuring proper adhesion and enhancing the performance of the waterproofing system. Here are some of the key advantages:

  • Enhanced Adhesion: Torch-on primers are specifically formulated to promote adhesion between the substrate (such as concrete, wood, or metal) and the waterproofing membrane. By applying a primer, you create a strong bond between the membrane and the substrate, reducing the risk of delamination or detachment over time.

  • Improved Waterproofing: Proper adhesion is essential for creating a seamless and watertight waterproofing barrier. Torch-on primers help to seal porous surfaces, fill in minor irregularities, and provide a smooth and uniform surface for membrane application. This ensures that the waterproofing system effectively prevents water infiltration and protects the underlying structure from leaks and water damage.

  • Surface Preparation: Torch-on primers also serve as a surface preparation treatment, cleaning and conditioning the substrate to receive the waterproofing membrane. They remove dirt, dust, and contaminants that could interfere with adhesion, ensuring a clean and properly prepared surface for membrane installation.

  • Compatibility: Torch-on primers are designed to be compatible with torch-on waterproofing membranes, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility between the two components of the system. Using a primer recommended by the membrane manufacturer helps to ensure compatibility and maximize the effectiveness of the waterproofing system.

  • Long-Term Performance: By promoting proper adhesion and enhancing the integrity of the waterproofing system, torch-on primers contribute to the long-term performance and durability of the roof or waterproofing application. A properly installed and primed system is more likely to withstand environmental stresses, temperature fluctuations, and other factors that can affect roof performance over time.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: While using a torch-on primer adds an additional step to the waterproofing process, it can ultimately save time and money by reducing the risk of callbacks, repairs, and premature failure. Investing in proper surface preparation and adhesion can help to extend the lifespan of the waterproofing system and minimize maintenance and repair costs over time.

Overall, using a torch-on primer before installing torch-on waterproofing membranes helps to ensure proper adhesion, improve waterproofing performance, and enhance the long-term durability of the waterproofing system. It's an essential step in the waterproofing process that can help to optimize the performance and lifespan of the roof or waterproofing application.

Personal protective equipment Required

Respiratory protection : In case of inadequate ventilation wear respiratory protection.
Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated
exposure levels, the hazards of the product and the safe
working limits of the selected respirator.
organic vapor filter (Type A)
Hand protection : Chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with an
approved standard should be worn at all times when handling
chemical products if a risk assessment indicates this is necessary.
Follow AS/NZS 1337.1
Recommended: Butyl rubber/nitrile rubber gloves.
Contaminated gloves should be removed.
Eye protection : Safety glasses
Skin and body protection : Protective clothing (e.g. safety shoes, long-sleeved working
clothing, long trousers)
Follow AS 2210:3
